Ishiguro-Kei House

At the end of a samurai residential street, lined with stately trees and houses with black outer walls, lies a unique building.

Some of the trees are several hundred years old, and the samurai residence street has survived disasters and warfare. The width of the street is still the same as it was when it was laid out by Yoshikatsu Ashina in 1620.

Past the stone gateposts, you will see a house with ochre-colored walls and Western-style window frames. There seems to be an essence of Japanese style but it is different from other samurai residences. Who lived in this house?

The house has characteristics of both Japanese and Western styles.

This is the former Ishiguro Kei House, designed and built in 1935. It is a branch of the Ishiguro family residence, which sits diagonally across the street.

It takes only 1 minute to walk there from the main Ishiguro family House.

The late Ishiguro Kei, who had moved to Chiba Prefecture, donated it to Kakunodate Town (now Senboku City) in May 1999. After restoration work, it has been open to the public since April 2010.

(Kei's study)

It is so spacious and open that it is hard to believe it is only 4.5 tatami mats in size. Also, the abundant use of glass provides wonderful lighting!

Ishiguro Naonobu is the 13th head of the Ishiguro family and Kei's relative. Kei was the son of Naonobu's great-aunt Hisa.

“Kei lived here in his childhood and became an architect in Chiba Prefecture, so I think he knew how wonderful this house was” says Naonobu. He also says that the former Ishiguro Kei House is “one of my favorite places.”

The earthen walls made with the outer skin of rice straw stalks and the bay windows throughout them are distinctive features of this house. The lighting fixtures are said to have remained from the time of construction.

It is covered with tiles that were popular in the early Showa period. Naonobu's father, Naotugi, is said to have used the bathroom.

One of the rooms that Naonobu says he likes. It has a small window through which dishes are served from the kitchen.

"Most Japanese houses are often vertical or parallel in design, but this house has an innovative diagonal design," says Naonobu.

The former Ishiguro Kei House is characterized by the addition of a Western-style room to a traditional Japanese-style house, and the use of a common entrance to create a series of rooms. It is a valuable cultural asset that continues to tell the history of Kakunodate's residential transition from the Edo period to the present day.
